Best NAS hard drives for Synology

What "Synology verified" means

When a drive says Synology verified, that's Synology's word, not ours. We pulled their compatibility data for every Synology NAS model in July 2026 and tagged the drives they actually list. A drive without the tag still works - it's the same CMR NAS or enterprise class, and it's fine under DSM 7.3 - Synology just hasn't added it, which happens a lot with the newest drives (the 24TB Exos, Toshiba's MG11, Seagate's IronWolf Pro NT line).

Pulling that data is also where the 2025 shift really shows. A 2022 DS1522+ lists more than 100 compatible drives - WD Red Plus, IronWolf, Toshiba MG, the lot - while a 2025 DS925+ lists only Synology's own HAT drives. Whether a drive is officially listed comes down to your exact model, so always check yours.

Will these drives work in your Synology?

Physically, they all fit - every drive here is a 3.5-inch SATA CMR drive, which is what a DiskStation bay takes. In 2025 the sticking point isn't fit or reliability, it's Synology's compatibility policy, and that depends on how new your unit is.

Synology keeps a compatibility list for each model. On anything from 2024 or earlier - a DS923+, DS1522+, DS220+ - the list is wide and already covers the mainstream NAS drives, so a third-party disk just works, with no warnings and every feature available.

The 2025 Plus models (DS925+, DS425+, DS725+, DS1525+, DS1825+) are where it got messy. At launch in April 2025, they flat-out refused to install DSM or build a storage pool on anything that wasn't a Synology-branded or Synology-verified drive - a hard lockout. After plenty of backlash, the DSM 7.3 update in October 2025 walked most of it back for SATA: third-party SATA drives install and build pools again, and the "unverified drive" banner is mostly for show.

"Mostly" is carrying some weight there. On a 2025 unit, an unlisted drive still gives up a few things: NVMe SSD read/write cache, deduplication, DSM's one-click firmware updates, and the full drive-health and lifespan readout. And the reprieve only covered spinning drives - to build a pool on M.2 NVMe SSDs, you still need drives from Synology's list.

My take: this is a margin play, not a technical one. A WD Red Plus or an IronWolf is the same dependable drive in a Synology as it is in any other NAS. If you're on a 2025 box and you actually use NVMe cache or dedup, buy from Synology's verified list or budget for its HAT drives. If you don't touch those features, a solid third-party CMR drive is still a perfectly good call - and a lot cheaper. Either way, check the list for your exact model before you buy.

What makes a drive right for a Synology

Three things matter more than the brand on the label.

CMR, not SMR. SMR drives overlap their tracks to pack in more capacity, and they slow to a crawl under sustained writes - exactly what an SHR or RAID rebuild throws at them. That can stretch a rebuild out for days or get the drive kicked from the volume entirely. Everything here is CMR.

NAS or enterprise class. WD Red Plus and Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf and IronWolf Pro, Toshiba N300 and MG, and the enterprise Exos and Ultrastar families are built for what a NAS puts a drive through: constant vibration from the bays around it, running around the clock, and RAID error-recovery timing (TLER/ERC). That last one quietly earns its keep - without it, a drive that pauses to recover a weak sector can get mistaken for a dead one and dropped from the array.

SATA. DiskStation bays take SATA drives; SAS is for Synology's rackmount and enterprise gear. That's why this list is SATA only.

Synology's own drives vs third-party

Synology's own HAT3300 (NAS) and HAT5300 (enterprise) drives are rebadged mainstream disks - the HAT5300 is a Toshiba MG underneath - sold at a premium over the drive they're based on. The premium buys you guaranteed compatibility, firmware updates through DSM, and clean support on the newer boxes. On a 2025 Plus unit, that can be worth it if you just want every feature with zero hassle. On anything older, a listed third-party drive gets you the same reliability for less money.

Match sizes and lean on SHR

A RAID volume can only use as much as its smallest drive, so matched capacities keep things simple. Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) gives you more room to mix sizes over time, but a set of identical CMR drives is still the tidiest way to build a pool.
