NASdisks helps you choose the right hard drive for a NAS or RAID array, using data instead of marketing.

What we do

  • Compare every currently-sold NAS-relevant drive by capacity, recording technology (CMR vs SMR), class, and price per terabyte.
  • Rank by measured reliability. We compute annualized failure rates (AFR) from Backblaze Drive Stats - real failures across hundreds of thousands of drives - rather than guessing.
  • Track prices across regions (US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Canada) so you see what a drive actually costs where you are.

Our principles

  • Independent. Rankings follow the data, not affiliate commissions. We flag SMR drives as poor NAS choices even when recommending them would pay us.
  • Honest about limits. Where we don't have large-scale failure data for a drive, we say so and fall back to manufacturer specs - we never invent numbers.
  • CMR-first for NAS. We treat conventional-recording (CMR) drives as the RAID-safe default and exclude SMR from NAS recommendations.
